Furman edges Western Carolina 83-79 with late run

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) Noah Gurley scored 13 points, including six-straight down the stretch and Furman handed Western Carolina its first Southern Conference loss 83-79 on Wednesday night.

Gurley broke a tie with a layup at the 4:12 mark, his jumper made it 73-69 and he followed with two free throws at 2:18. In that stretch the Catamounts, the last unbeaten team in the league, missed two shots and had a turnover

After Mason Faulker ended the drought for Western Carolina, Jordan Lyons made 4 of 5 free throw and Clay Mounce added another to make it 79-71 with less than a minute to go.

Alex Hunter made four free throws in the final 30 seconds to offset a couple 3-pointers.

Lyons led the Paladins (14-4, 5-1) with 20 points, Mounce added 15, Hunter 13 apiece and Jalen Slawson 12. Reserve Mike Bothwell was the only other Paladin to score, getting 10.

Carlos Dotson scored 21 points on 10 of 14 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds for Western Carolina (12-5, 4-1). Matt Halvorsen and Onno Steger scored 14 points apiece and Faulker had 12 points and 10 assists.

The Catamounts, who had a five-game winning streak end, was off to its best start in 20 years.
