Unlike the catcher position, there are an abundance of good first baseman. And other than Pujos, the second and third tiers are not that far from each other. We also recommend, if you have the first pick in the draft, although you wouldn’t go wrong with Pujos, take someone else. There will be plenty of very good first basemen available outside the top ten. After all, wouldn’t you rather have Hanley Ramirez and someone like Adrian Gonzalez/Derrek Lee than Albert Pujos and Jason Bartlett? Or A-Rod and a good first baseman? We would.

1. Albert Pujos: This is a no brainer. You know exactly what you’ll get and you’ll never be disappointed.
2. Ryan Howard: 2-5 are a horse a piece. But well take Howard and a little lower batting average for a guaranteed 46 HR and 145 RBIs his average should keep getting better, but those stats with a .279 average (last year). We can live with that.
3. Mark Teixeiria: He could easily be number 5, but we like the fact that he’s in the bandbox of Yankee Stadium and the lineup is protected up and down. If he can avoid a slow start like usual, he could be a monster!
4. Prince Fielder: How can a guy go from 50 to 34 back to 46 HRs? I guess Prince knows the answer. His 141 RBIs 23 more than his 119 a couple years ago. A little inconsistent as far as his ceiling, but you can pencil him in for at least 38/125 this year.
5. Miguel Cabrera: if 34/103/.324 batting average is a terrible year for you the upside is unlimited. these stats as the fifth overall 1b, you know this position is deep. They say his off field problems are behind. Lets hope so.
6. Pablo Sandoval: We usually stay away from the youngsters, but we love this kid. His flexibility to play 3rd is also a bonus. He’s a head of the next couple first basemen mainly because we know he’ll hit .325 in his sleep with potential of.340-.350.
7. Adrian Gonzalez: If only he was on a better team and in a more friendly hitter stadium.
8. Justin Morneau: One of the most consistent players around. The new improved lineup of the twins could help, but the new stadium could hurt. We expect him to put up the same numbers as he always does and well worthy of the 8th spot.
9. Kevin Youkilis: Over rated a couple of years ago, now he is underrated. He will post a .300 average and hit 25-30 bombs. We do expect his RBI total to go back up.
10. Kendry Morales: Another kid we really like. But lets prove yourself more than one year.
10b/10c/10d: All pretty much the same, all pretty good: Joey Votto, Derrek Lee, and Lance Berkman.
Warning: Danger Will Robinson danger! We’re recommending staying away from Mark Reynolds. We feel he’s as close to a one hit wonder as you will ever find. Had a monster year last season, but his .260 average says that his HRs could decline just as quickly as a blackjack dealer will take your money. Let someone else take him, and they will before players 10a,b,c,d. All of whom we like better.

Our sleeper at this position, and more so if you’re really desperate would be Todd Helton and Paul Konerko. Both have been drafted in the very late rounds, but as your Corner man, nothing wrong with either one of them.

Like we said, you can wait on 1b and still come up with quality a player. But once people start drafting there back ups make sure you grab one a that point.

2nd Base coming soon.
