Every year as we get closer to the bowl season and the BCS Championship in college football, the arguement about getting a playoff in college football compared to the current BCS system. One of the biggest arguements made for the BCS system is that a playoff would lengthen a college football season and take the student-athlete out of the classroom for more time. This arguement is utterly rediculous for so many reasons. Lets take a look.
First of all, over the past 4 or 5 years the NCAA has made an adjustment to add another regular season game to each teams schedule, so instead of playing 11 regular season games they are playing 12. Besides that the Big-12, SEC, ACC, Conference-USA & MAC Conferences have also added conference championship games so some teams are playing 13 games even before their bowl game. How about getting rid of the 12th regular season game. Even if they had a 8 team playoff, which I would like to see, that would take care of the amount of games being played by every team in CFB except for the two teams that are playing in a championship game.
So the arguement against that is that the season runs too long then. But do we really need to have almost a month off between the last regular season and the last bowl games or in a new situation, the start of the playoffs. If we do, then what is the big deal if the season runs a couple weeks in to January. This is the winter break for most schools anyway and don’t take the student-athletes out of the classroom at all. Plus once again we are talking about just a 8 teams out of over 120. Really we are talking about 4 teams with extra time, because their first playoff game would be in place of the bowl game they were already playing.
Finally, is the NCAA really thinking about the student-athlete when they argue this anyway. If that is the case, is football the only student-athletes they are thinking about, or are they just thinking about the almight $. Every year, the college basketball season begins earlier. In the past, the first big day of college basketball was on the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving. This year, the college basketball schedule had over 50 Vegas rotation games were scheduled on the Friday, two weeks prior to Thanksgiving, and that doesn’t include the non-board games and other tournaments and challenges. At the end of the basketball season the conference tournaments and NCAA tournaments in both mens and womens hoops fall during most universities mid-terms, but you don’t here about that. This is the same for NCAA hockey, while the entire regular season falls at the end of the school year for most schools. OK, maybe they really don’t care about the college football student-athletes either. Just take a look at the scheduling during the regular season. It used to be that college football was played on Saturday, then they added a Thursday night game here and there. Now take a look, we have college action on Tuesday, Wednesday, 2 or 3 games on Thursday and 1 to 3 games on Friday and even a few on Sunday. Is this for the student-athletes or to get more games on TV and make more money!
OK, I have to say in the sports handicapping business, the longer basketball season and the added weekday football helps us for business, but not having a college football playoff really bothers me and I hate to hear the different excuses that the NCAA comes up with not to switch their current system. So there is my little rant for today. It won’t change anything, I’m sure, but I feel better. Hopefully, this gets you to say, “Hey, Your Right!”.
