NFL Mid-Season Sharpies
- Updated: November 2, 2016
It has been a very interesting 1st half to the NFL season. So many storylines from the suspensions to Tom Brady & Le’Veon Bell to key injuries like Adrian Peterson and J.J. Watt. So lets look back at the first 8 weeks of the season and give out some awards from what we have seen. Then try to look to the future on what we will see in the second half of the season.
Lets start things off with the 1st Half Sharpies. We will give away the Top Offensive Players, Defensive Players, Rookies and Teams. We will also give away some Dullies, aka the disappointments by players and teams. So lets get started.
TOP AFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER Oakland QB Derek Carr – Carr has been outstanding. He has completed 66.3% of his passes for 290 yds/game, 17 TDs and only 3 Ints. He has led his young Raider team to a AFC West leading 6-2 mark. His 100.9 QBR leads the AFC. (Honorable Mention – Tenn RB DeMarco Murray & Cincy WR A.J. Green)
TOP NFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliot – The Cowboy rookie RB has lead the way to a 6-1 start in Big D. His is playing like a veteran All-Star rushing for a NFL leading 799 yards rushing. He has also caught 15 passes for 150 more yards and has 5 TDs. (Honorable Mention – Atl QB Matt Ryan & Atl WR Julio Jones)
TOP AFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER Denver LB Von Miller – Miller has lead the Super Bowl Champs (6-2) to a solid start the same way he did last year. He ranks 2nd in the NFL with 8.5 sacks and has one forced fumble. He has been all over the field disrupting offenses all season. (Honorable Mention – Buff LB Lorenzo Alexander & KC DB Marcus Peters)
TOP NFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER Seattle DE Cliff Avril – On a unit that has defensive superstars like Richard Sherman, Bobby Wagner & Kam Chancellor, Avril has been been the brightest. He has a NFC leading 7.5 sacks with 3 passes defended and 3 forced fumbles for the NFC West leading Seahawks (4-2-1). (Honorable Mention – Car LB Luke Kuechly & Minn S Harrison Smith)
TOP AFC ROOKIE San Diego TE Hunter Henry – You probably didn’t expect to see a Tight End in any of the awards but Hunter Henry looks like he will fit in perfectly when Antonio Gates retires. Henry has 22 catches for 340 yards and 3 TDs for the Bolts. (Honorable Mention – Den QB Trevor Siemian & Den RB Devontae Booker)
TOP NFC ROOKIE Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliot – His numbers are good enough to be the Top Overall Offensive player in the NFC so there is no doubt he is the top rookie too. There have been a couple of other young stars in the NFC though (Honorable Mention – Dall QB Dak Prescott & Phil QB Carson Wentz)
TOP AFC TEAM New England Patriots – Even without Tom Brady the Pats were able to start the season 3-1 and once Brady returned they have rolled off 4 more straight wins outscoring opponents (136-71). Belichek has his team focused and ready to make another run to a Super Bowl. (Honorable Mention – Oakland Raiders & Denver Broncos)
TOP NFL TEAM Dallas Cowboys – Everyone is focused on the pair of rookies in the backfield for the Cowboys but their true strength comes from the 5 guys in front of them. The offensive line of Smith, Collins, Fredrick, Martin & Free have lead the way to their 6-1 record. With the return of Tony Romo with the Cowboys handle things right and keep things on track or does it become a distraction? (Honorable Mention – Minnesota Vikings & Atlanta Falcons)
So how about the disappointing starts to the season. Let’s give away a couple of Dullies!!
MOST DISAPPOINTING AFC PLAYER Jacksonville QB Blake Bortles – Bortles lead the AFC in completions and passing yards in 2015. This season his numbers have dropped in every offensive category except turnovers where he has 9 interceptions and 2 fumbles lost. His less than impressive numbers have directly comparison to his teams 2-5 record. A team that had high hopes to make a playoff run this year.
MOST DISAPPOINTING NFC PLAYER Los Angeles RB Todd Gurley – After an outstanding rookie season last year where he ran for 1106 yards (4.8 yds/carry)and 10 TDS, Gurley’s numbers have dropped dramatically. This season he has yet to have a 100 yard rushing game and has scored just 3 times. Even worse his yards/carry has dropped to 3.0.
MOST DISAPPOINTING AFC TEAM Indianapolis Colts – The AFC South looks to be the weakest division in the NFL and Houston lost defensive superstar J.J. Watt, still the Colts have managed just a 3-5 record and are 2 games back of the Texans in the division. They are just 1-2 in the AFC South. The O-line has to come together to give Andrew Luck more time if they are going to improve in the 2nd half of the season.
MOST DISAPPOINTING NFC TEAM Carolina Panthers – The NFC Champs have struggles all season long. At 2-5 they sit 2½ back of Atlanta in the division including 0-3 in the division. They do have a chance to get hot and make a move but with 5 loses already there isn’t much room for mistakes or losses if they are going to make the playoffs.
So will things change? Who will get hot? Who will cool down? Probably the biggest question is who will get hurt and who will stay healthy? Those are questions that are impossible to predict, but if things go the way they are I would watch for Tom Brady and company to stay atop of the AFC. You can’t underestimate the Champs though. The Broncos get it down on defense and as the weather gets cold and worse they will get even better. In the NFC, I truly think it is wide open. I will give you a 6-team pool and you make the pick. (Dallas, Minnesota, Green Bay, Atlanta, Seattle & Arizona). Staying healthy or for some getting healthy will make the difference here.
