What a great time of year if you love college football!  Last week, the schedule lacked the “Big Game or Games”.  This week they make up for it with a couple of key conference match-ups.  The Big East lead is up for grabs with Pittsburgh going to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats!  The ACC has a couple of match-up that could decide each divisional winner as Miami-FL takes on Georgia Tech on Thursday for the lead in the ACC - Coastal Division, while Maryland hosts Florida St for the lead in the ACC Atlantic Division.  Wednesday night, it is a battle in the MAC -West Division as Ball St takes on Central Michigan.  Both teams are undefeated in conference play.  The Mountain West title will be on the line when BYU takes on Utah.  The Sun Belt crown is on the line when UL-Lafayette takes on Troy.  Then their is a little game in the Big-12, where #2 Texas Tech goes to #5 Oklahoma.  The winner there would have the upper hand to play in the Big-12 Championship and possibly the BCS Championship game.  Finally the game we are going to take a closer look at this week here as the Big-10 crown, a Rose Bowl bid and even possibly a BCS Championship game invite could all be on the line at Michigan St takes on Penn St.

At the beginning of the season, you wouldn’t have had a very tough time convincing me that this could be very well be a preview of the AFC Championship game.  The season hasn’t quite played out that way and now you would have a incredibly tough time sell me that same statement.  The Steelers side of things would be the easier of the two halfs to convince me on, but the San Diego Chargers may be the biggest disappointment in the NFL so far this year.  Still as disappointing as they have been, they are still just a game out of their division lead and the wildcard.  So this week, this game may have lost a little of its luster, but it is still very important for both teams.  Lets take a look at each of them.

This time of the year it is always tough to play on the road.  So lets talk about the new #1 team in the country.  For the first time since October 27th, 1980, the Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field as the #1 team in the country.  They did win the National Championship in 1992, but weren’t ranked #1 during that season until their win over Miami-FL.  The field they will take will be Death Valley in Baton Rouge, LA.  The team across the field from them is the defending national champions, the LSU Tigers.  This is going to be another war is the SEC!  LSU knows that it is going to be tough for them to get back into the BCS title hunt with their 2 losses.  Things would be also tough for them to get to the SEC Championship Game.  They would need a win here and win out the rest of the way and would need Alabama to lose to either Mississippi St or Auburn in their final two weeks.  Still don’t tell me the Bayou Bengals would love to knock old coach Nick Saban off the College Football summit.  Lets take a look at both teams.

Heading into this season, I don’t think anyone would even try to make an argument that anyone besides the New England Patriots would win the AFC East.  Now here we are with all the teams in that division with 7 games and it truly is a dogfight for all 4 teams.  The Patriots and the Bills are tied for the lead at 5-2, but the New York Jets are just a game back at 4-3 and even Miami is 3-4 and playing much better.  So this week when the Jets head up-state to take on the Bills, the AFC East lead will be up for grabs.  Let’s take a look at each of the teams in this crucial divisional match-up.

So the Texas Longhorns (3-0 7-0) have passed their first two big tests with flying colors.  First they took care of Oklahoma, then they jumped on Missouri.  The tests aren’t done yet.  As a matter of fact, they really have just begun for the #1 team in the first BCS rankings of the season.  They still have 3 more ranked teams on their schedule and more than likely a fourth waiting at the Big-12 Championship game.  This week the test is the offensive attack of the Oklahoma St Cowboys (3-0 7-0).  The Cowboys are currently #6 in the BCS and  sport a dangerous double threat offense.  Lets take a look at both teams closer.

So when you are talking about a division lead being up for grabs in the NFL, you usually aren’t talking about a pair of 3-3 teams doing battle.  That is exactly what we have this week as the Minnesota Vikings take on the Chicago Bears.  Both teams look like they have plenty of holes, but then again both teams also look like they have plenty of potential to be good football teams.  In both cases, they will go as far as their defenses will take them.  Let’s take a look at each team a little closer.

How often can you say that a batle between #4 & #11 isn’t the top match-up of the weekend?  Well, this week the Red River Rivalry between #1 Oklahoma and #5 Texas may take the top billing, but when #4 LSU heads to Gainville to take #11 Florida there will be plenty of eyes watching.  Lucky for us, the TV networks were wise enough to put the Big-12 battle during the day and the SEC tilt at night so we won’t have to wear out out jump button on the remote.  Here we are going to look at the night battle in the SEC.  We may be looking at a rematch later this season for the Conference Championship, sorry Vandy and Bama, I don’t mean to count you out.  We have a battle of the last 2 National Champions.

Wow, I guess it is try what they say, “Any Given Sunday!”  Last week we saw 2 huge upsets with 0-3 KC knocking off 3-0 Denver and the 3-0 Cowboys getting beat at home by rival Washington.  All season long we will continue to see upsets as we do every year.  It the match-up that we are going to talk about this week, I don’t think anyone would truly call it an upset if either team came up with the victory.  Both the Tennessee Titans and the Baltimore Ravens are pretty good football teams.  As a matter of fact, I expect both of these teams to be right in the playoff hunt in the AFC all season long.  This may be the most up in the air season that we have seen in a long time.  Right now there is no real #1 in either conference.  So lets take a look at both of these teams a bit.

The Big-10 kicks off their 2008 conference schedule this weekend and we have a battle between two top-25 teams.  No it is not 4-0 Minnesota at Ohio St.  It isn’t Wisconsin taking on Michigan at the Big House.  Instead it is the Fighting Illini and the Nittany Lions.  #12 Penn St is at home at Happy Valley to take on #23 Illinois.

Bragging rights are up for grabs in the Keystone State here in week 3 as the Eagle host the Steelers.  Both teams are coming of Prime-time games last week with totally different results.  Last Sunday night the Steelers shut down the Browns high-powered offense and hung on for a tight 10-6 victory to improve their record to 2-0.  On the other side of the ball, the Eagles (1-1) dropped a high-scoring shootout on Monday Night in Dallas 41-37.   So with these two teams getting together what can we expect?

As we head into week 3 of the college football season, we kick things up a notch.  From what I have seen so far, I don’t expect we saw anything that will affect the BCS Championship Match-up!  That all changes this week as the Ohio St Buckeyes head out to the west coast for a prime time battle with the USC Trojans.  There are still alot of games that will eventually lead to the title game, but this will be a big one.

The NFL gets underway and the AFC South is wasting no time with getting the divisional action underway.  The AFC South looks like it could be the toughest division in football with the Colts, Texans, Jaguars and Titans.  Last season only the Texans failed to make the playoffs, but they still finished 8-8.  The combined regular season record from the AFC South was 42-22, the best in the NFL.   The NFC East was second at 40-24.  For the second straight year Jacksonville and Tennessee kickoff their season against each other.  Last year they met in the opener in Jacksonville with the Titans winning that contest 13-10.  Their other meeting in Tennessee came in November and the Jags came out ahead 28-13.

This season the Pac-10 is wasting no time. They have 2 in-conference battles here in week one as Washington takes on Oregon and then the game we are going talk about as Oregon St takes on Stanford.

Last season, the Beavers shocked most of the Pac-10 by finishing third going 9-4 overall and 6-3 in conference play. This year they won’t be able to sneak up on teams. It won’t be easy to repeat their 2007 season. Even though they return both of their QBs from last year in Lyle Moevao and Sean Canfield along with 2006 Pac-10 leading receiver Sammy Stroughter, he missed all but 3 games last year do to injuries, they have to replace their entire front seven on defense.

Every year when I go to write this article, the first thing that I do is come up with a list of potential players that could emerge to be the top college player in the country. Most years there are a couple of players that jump out at you from what they have done in the past, but I always have to go digging to find those young players that will step up their game. This year, coming up with a list was the easy part. Narrowing down the list to come up with a Top-5 was the hard part. Of course, when you have a returning winner, you have to put him on top or near the top of the list. When Tim Tebow won the award last year, the first sophomore to ever win it, it opened the door to many other underclassmen to go after the award. Lets take a look at who may take home the hardware this season.

Every year you see a couple of NFL teams take all that extra money that they have under the salary cap and over-spend on high priced free agents. More often than not these teams seem for one reason or another to fall short of their main goal - the Super Bowl Championship. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that teams shouldn’t try to improve themselves through free agency, but they must realize that putting together a solid core of players and then adding a piece or two via the free agency market seems to be the recipe for success. That is why this weekend’s NFL draft is so important for both the teams that are in contention for a title and for the teams that are trying to pick themselves up from the bottom of their divisions. When it comes to the draft, you should expect immediate impact. It takes a couple years for these young players to adjust to the NFL, learn the system and jell with their teammates. The whole jell thing is the reason I believe the big free agent move thing seems not to work. If you take a look at the past couple Super Bowl champs you will see exactly what I am talking about.
