Yes, it’s that time of the year again. And yes, we know fantasy baseball doesn’t compare to fantasy football. But if you’ve never given it a chance, do so, it’s a blast! Huddle Up Sports is going to help the beginners out a little by giving you our player’s rank by position. (We really don’t want to, because the Sharpe Shooter will steal all Huddle players). But we’re good enough at this as well as handicapping so we’ll just adapt. With that said, here is our list for catchers:
CATCHERS:
1. Joe Mauer: No surprise here, BUT be a little hesitant. He’s been going in the first round (Obviously the only catcher to do so). We feel there’s no way he’s going to duplicate his season of last year. It was a career year and he won’t have the comfort of the dome either.
2. Victor Martinez: Not far behind Joe Mauer. May be eligible at 1b as well, but a player of this quality has to be used as catcher. Hopefully he will stay healthy
3. Brian McCann: This is the last of the top tier catchers. Going 4-6 rounds. If you don’t nab one of the top there wait on drafting a catcher until the later rounds. There’s really no head and shoulders above the rest.
4. Jorge Posada: Could possibly be in the top tier, but we’re leaving him out just for the fact he is so injury prone (Only 111 and 51 games the last two season). And he’s no spring chicken at 38.
5. Geovany Soto: Like we said there is a monster drop off here. But he is a prime candidate to bounce back. He’s come into spring training in great shape. But don’t grab him early at all as the next 5 could easily be as good if not better than Soto.
6. Matt Wieters: He’s ranked sixth only by default. Although he has all the talent, and all the hype in the world, we still don’t really like the young unproved player. 9 HRs/43 RBIs and a .288 batting average in 96 games? As Shania Twain says “That don’t impress me much”.
7. Benji Molina: Here is our sleeper and you can always grab him later than we have him ranked. But he is a model of consistency. You know exactly what you will get from him- 18-19 HRs 80 RBIs and a .288 average. Not too shabby from a player that’s not in most peoples top ten from a very weak position.
8. Russell Martin: He’s hurt right now, and will be out for around a month. But we still like him. Another player primed for a big comeback. He’s not nearly as bad as last years stats, but if you draft him on that, you’ll be in trouble.
9. Kurt Suzuki: Improving every year. And he plays games with no splitting time. 147 and 148 games the last two years. Anytime you can get that many games out of a catcher that keeps improving, there’s a monster upside. Don’t draft too early though.
10. Ryan Doumit: Another sleeper that isn’t going in the top 10 at catchers. We actually love this guy. Two years ago when healthy an playing in just 118 games 15 hrs/69 rbis/.318. If only he could stay healthy for an entire season.
There’s our top ten catchers. It is a very weak position as mentioned. If you don’t get a top tier catcher, just WAIT. There are way to many questions and way too many injuries at this position to draft early. Like we said 5-10 are a horse a piece and Molina and Doumit haven’t been drafted in the first 10 catchers in most drafts, so if you wait, let others waste a pick on them and scrap the bottom when everyone else has there second tier catcher… there are plenty of second tier catchers available.
Stay tuned for our 1b rankings, unlike catchers, a position with plenty of talent.
