Come Sunday evening your 2010 NCAA Championship hopefuls will whittled down to just 65 qualifiers, neatly sorted into their four regional brackets. The NCAA Tournament may rightfully be – as many claim – the country’s most exciting sporting event of the year but, for our money, we’ll put Championship Week right on par with The Big Dance.
Seven consecutive days of single-elimination March Madness (without The Dance’s lengthy breaks and venue changes), 128 conference tournament one-and-done showdowns (compared to 64 for The Dance) including 41 on Thursday alone (versus 16 on The Dance’s opening Thursday), plus 18 electrifying conference championship games for automatic bids on the line – and that doesn’t even include those for the Missouri Valley Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference already won by Northern Iowa and Murray State!
OK, any comparison against the NCAA Tournament is a tough sell but Championship Week ranks right up there for the sheer volume of must-win action plus quick turnover of the brackets – two situations that make the Vegas line-makers nervous and unquestionably vulnerable.
