MLB Mid-Point Look!

The Fourth of July has come and gone. All of the MLB teams have also past their Mid-Point of 81 games. Most have between 84-88 games under their belt. Yes we are only sitting at the Mid-Point but take a look at how hard it is for a team to fight back into contention. Take a look at a team like the Washington Nationals. They are currently 42-43, 7 games behind the division leading Atlanta Braves (49-36). If the Braves only play a game over.500 the rest of the season they would end up with a record of 88-74. If that was the case the Nationals are going to have to go 46-31 (.597 winning percentage). Only 4 teams have a better winning percentage currently. Now what if the Braves play at the winning percentage they have played at in the 1st half of the season (.576). That would put them at 93-69. To catch the Braves, the Nats would have to finish at 51-26 (.662 winning percentage). Things are even tougher for teams in the American League. Currently there are 3 teams in the AL that have a record above .500 but are not in the playoffs if the season ended today. Currently the Red Sox (59-29), Cleveland (48-37) and Houston (57-31) are the division leaders. The two wildcard teams are the Yankees at 56-28 and Mariners at 55-32. Because of the great records for the two wildcard teams it is going to be tough for anyone else to battle back into the playoff picture. The 3 teams that are above .500 are Oakland (48-39), LA Angels (44-43) & Tampa Bay (43-43). So looking at the same situation as we did with the Nationals. We are going to use Seattle as the playoff team since they are the final Wildcard team currently. If they play 1 game over .500 ball the rest of the season they will end up at 93-69. To catch the Ms. The Athletics would have to go 45-30 (.600), the Angels would have to go 49-26 (.653) and Rays would have to go 50-26 (.658). If Seattle played at their current pace of .632 it would be impossible to catch them. They would end up with a record of 102-60. That means The Athletics would have to go 54-21 (.720), the Angels would have to go 58-17 (.773) and the Rays would have to go 59-17 (.776). Even if Seattle goes 35-40 (.467) the rest of the season, the 3 chasing them would still have to play very well. The Athletics would have to go 42-33 (.560), the Angels (46-29 .613) and the Rays (47-29 .618). So now that we have gone over these scenarios, lets take a look at what the Vegas Odds look like now.
