Phillies @ Cardinals on 5/18

Hello, Sports Fans! We are now in the heart of the Major League Baseball season and will be looking at some interesting match ups from the diamond with a free selection each trip. The first entry takes us to the National League for Phillies @ Cardinals Friday night. Let’s take a look…

Philadelphia: The Phillies (24-16, 8-10 road) have recently made a nice move with a 5-1 home stand against the Giants and Mets and are now back on the road with a challenging 4-game set against the Birds at Busch Stadium. Friday night, right-handed ace Jake Arrieta (3-1, 2.59 ERA) gets the start, looking for his 6th quality start in 8 tries and pitching some of his best ball with just 1 run earned over his last 2 starts and holding a 1.06 WHIP for the season.

Philadelphia’s sticks have been very active this season with a competitive 4.70 runs per game and 66 doubles to go with 44 team homers. 3B Maikel Franco (.273 BA, 7 HR, 27 RBI) has made a solid step forward this campaign while CF Odubel Herrera leads both leagues with a dynamite .357 average and has reached base safely in 42 straight games.

St Louis: The Cardinals (23-17, 11-7 home) only managed a split of their 6-game road trip against the Padres and Twins and look to regain some momentum back on their home bases. 50 homers for the squad is respectable but could use a little more contact down the order (.230 team BA) to build on the current production of 4.28 runs per game. 1B Jose Martinez and SS Paul DeJong are getting the job done while CF Tommy Pham is proving 2017 was no fluke with a .312 BA to go with 8 homers, 30 runs, and 7 stolen bases.

Michael Wacha (4-1, 3.09 ERA) gets the call to the mound Friday night and he has been extremely strong over his last 5 starts, allowing just 6 earned over 29 innings for a sterling 1.86 ERA. The only downside for this right-hander is that he doesn’t generally go deep into games, usually recording five or six strong innings before turning it over to the pen. Nonetheless, just 1 long-ball allowed in his last 7 trips has placed the relief in strong positions to convert wins.

FREE SELECTION: Friday night provides us with a fine early match up of a couple crews with their eyes on the post-season, along with a couple sharp arms that can dominate without huge strikeout numbers. Tough call here but we’ll go with the home St Louis Cardinals.
