Half Way Home!

When you have 30 teams playing 162 games in a season, most of them outdoors, it is hard to come up with the exact Mid-point of the season. But July 1st comes pretty close. We have had pretty much 3 months of baseball and we have about 3 months left. Many of the teams are close to the 81 game point. So why do we care so much about the standings right now when we still have plenty of ball to be played? Well if you take a look at the recent past and if you are at the top or near the top of your division on July 1st, you have a pretty good chance to be sitting there at the end of the regular season and reserving a spot in the post season. Lets take a look at the recent past and see how things played out.

The first thing we look at it last year. Talk about a example of wanting to be in the lead on July 1st. In the 2016 season 5 of the 6 division leaders on July 1st won their division for the season. Only the Boston Red Sox were not leading their division on July 1st, though they would have been a Wildcard team if the season would have ended on July 1st. The team that was in the lead on July 1st was the Baltimore Orioles. Even though they didn’t win their division, they did make the playoffs as a Wildcard team. As a matter of fact, of the 10 teams that would have made the playoffs if the season ended on July 1st, 9 of them actually did make the playoffs last year. The only team that made the playoffs that weren’t in a playoff spot on July 1st was the Toronto Blue Jays and they were just a game out of the Wild Card on July 1st. The Houston Astros were the team that didn’t make it into the playoffs. The eventual World Series Champion, Chicago Cubs had best record in baseball on July 1st, with a mark of 51-28.

The 3 years before 2016, the trend was also very strong. Maybe not as strong as 2016 but overall it is a pretty good sign if your team is in a playoff spot right now, that they will be in the hunt at the end of the season. Overall the past 4 seasons, 30 of the 40 teams that were in a playoff spot on July 1st, made the actual playoffs. That is a very solid 75%. Of the 24 teams that were leading their divisions on July 1st over the past 4 seasons, 11 won their division and 17 made the playoffs. So what if your team isn’t one of the playoff teams right now? Do you have a shot? Well lets just say I hope they are close. Over the past 4 years only 1 team has been more than 3 games out of the Wild Card on July 1st and made the playoffs. That was the 2013 LA Dodgers, who were just 38-43 on July 1st but caught fire and went 54-27 to finish the year and win the NL West.

So with all of that, let’s take a look at the current leaders on July 1st this year. Right now the division leaders are the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, Washington Nationals, Milwaukee Brewers & Los Angeles Dodgers. Your 4 Wild Card teams right now would be the NY Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the American League and Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies in the National Leagues. So how about the teams that are still within 3 games of the Wildcard Spots. In the AL they are Minnesota Twins, LA Angels, Kansas City Royals, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. In the NL no other teams are within 3 games of the 2nd Wildcard spot. The closest would be the Chicago Cubs who are 7 games behind the Colorado Rockies but they are only 2 games behind the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers. The St Louis Cardinals are also just 3½ games behind the Brewers.

Let’s take a look at our division leaders and their current odds to win the World Series.
