Early Season College Hoops!
- Updated: December 7, 2016
When it comes to College Football many say that preseason rankings mean nothing and really you shouldn’t look at any of the rankings until about week 7 or 8 of the 14 week regular season. So with that being said the College Basketball regular season runs about 18 weeks so does that mean we shouldn’t look at the rankings until Week 9 or 10? That means we should be waiting until a couple weeks into January. Well if that is the case then we are wasting our breath, but if you take a look at what has happened over the past 4 years, I believe we can really look at what we have now and really know pretty much what we will see in Late March.
So lets take a look at this year’s Top-10 as of Week 5
7. North Carolina
Now we took a look at the Top-10 teams ranked in Week 5 over the past 4 years and where they ended up heading into the NCAA Tournament. The past 4 years the #1 seeds were Michigan St in 2015-16 ended up #2 heading into the post season, Kentucky in 2014-15 ended up #1, Michigan St in 2013-14 ended up #11, Indiana in 2012-13 ended up #4. Taking a look at the Top 5 the past 4 years, 13 of the teams remained in the Top 10. Of the full Top-10 the past 4 years, only 3 of the 40 didn’t remain in at least the Top-25 (one of those teams was Kentucky in 2014 and they still made the Final-Four that year) with 25 of the 40 remaining in the Top-10.
So those teams stayed ranked, but how well did they do in the NCAA Tournament? Even better I would say. If you take a look at the last 4 Champions and where they were ranked in the Week 5 poll you will see what I am saying (2016 Villanova #6, 2015 Duke #2, 2014 Connecticut #12 & 2013 Louisville #5). Looking at the entire 8 teams that have made it to the Championship game over the past 4 years only Connecticut, @ #12 in 2014, was outside of the Top-10 in Week 5. As a matter of fact that was the only team outside the Top-6 in the Week 5 polls for that year. Looking at the entire Final Four for those four years and 11 of the 16 teams were #8 or better in their week 5 polls and only 2 of them were not in the Top 25 (Syracuse #27 in 2016 and Michigan St #26 in 2015).
So with that being said, I would look above at the current Top-10 to find the teams you should expect to be playing in Phoenix at the beginning of April this year. So who do you like to go all the way? We would love to hear your opinions on the early season action. I can tell you right now if I were to pull the early trigger on a team right now, I would pencil in Kentucky to cut down the nets. So now we can concentrate of the College Bowl & Playoff games along with the NFL action, then refocus on hoops in late January!
